Coquitlam Foundation 2005-2006 Grants
PRESS RELEASE - May 1, 2006
The Coquitlam Foundation held its annual awards reception on April 27th at the Evergreen Cultural Centre with $39,350.00 being awarded to nine community groups, six bursary recipients and one scholarship winner. Foundation Chair, Colleen Talbot, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Norm Cook, Chair of the Grants Committee announced the awards.
Community groups receiving funding were Arts Connect; B.C. Professional Firefighters' Burn Fund (Coquitlam); Children of the Street Society; Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation; Share Family and Community Services Society; Society for Community Development; Friends of the Coquitlam Public Library; Tri City Women's Resource Society and the Rivershed Society of B.C.
2006 Individual Winners
Gerri Wallis, Foundation Vice Chair, then presented Bursary Awards to 2006 to the following recipients; Shervin Ghavami, Tommy Chung, Chloe Porte lance, Kelly Chow, Elaheh Kahrobaee-Khorassani and Natasha Pittman. The Awards range in amount from $900.00 to $2,000.00.
2006 Bursary Award Winners
Bill LeClair presented the Raymond A. LeClair Scholarship for $1500.00 to Andrea Baker. The Scholarship is in the name of Coquitlam's former City Manager and goes to a student planning to work in the public service.
Special recognition was given to former Mayor Jon Kingsbury for his service to the Foundation and Community. In his acceptance speech, he highlighted work of the Coquitlam Builders' Trust in supporting the Foundation for a number of years.
A special award was presented to Steve Vida by Mike McPhee, Chair of the Coquitlam Foundation Land Trust Committee. Steve has generously bequeathed his 1.8 acre property in Northeast Coquitlam to the Foundation. He was concerned about the future of his property and wanted it to be maintained in a natural state and used for education purposes. The Coquitlam Foundation has worked with The Land Conservancy of BC to pace a Conservation Covenant on his property to ensure the property is maintained according to Mr. Vida's wishes.

In concluding the formal part of the evening, Colleen Talbot, said "Tonight we have celebrated the high caliber of our Community organizations in Coquitlam" and she went on to say "It is a pleasure to be in a position to support such deserving students as they pursue post secondary education."
