CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COQUITLAM FOUNDATION

“When your heart tells you it's time to help people in your community, but your head doesn't know where to turn, it's time look to the Coquitlam Foundation. We're your hometown partner in philanthropy, helping you help your neighbours through charitable initiatives as simple as a one-time donation to our general fund or as profound as the establishment of an endowment fund.”

The Coquitlam Foundation is a vehicle that allows caring citizens to achieve their charitable goals.

The Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community by creating a permanent ever-growing, capital pool of funds, from which the distributions are made under the strict guidance of its board of directors.

Your donation can make a positive difference in our community. Your gift becomes a community asset in perpetuity.

Trust is the hallmark of your relationship with Coquitlam Foundation. Donors know they can rely on the Board to manage and steward their funds. The Foundation is flexible and can adapt to changes in the future. That means donors are assured that, decades from now, the original spirit and intent of their gifts will continue to be honoured.

Simply put, the Foundation helps people 'invest' their philanthropic dollars rather than just 'giving money away'. In doing so, it provides a unique opportunity for those who wish to support a community they value and leave a legacy for the future.

To Make a Donation
Two ways to make a Donation:
  1. By credit card
Click on the 'Donate Now' button on any page. This will take you to a secure site with CanadaHelps.org (also a Canadian charity).

If you would like your donation made in the name of a specific person or fund, you will find an opportunity to indicate this. CanadaHelps will issue you a tax receipt immediately and then send your donation and any instructions you leave on to us within a few business days.

  2. By cheque
Please make cheque payable to Coquitlam Foundation and mail to:

    Coquitlam Foundation
    c/o P.O. Box 2
    1207 Pinetree Way,
    Coquitlam, British Columbia
    Canada, V3B 7Y3

If you would like it under the name of a specific person or fund, please write that name at the bottom of the cheque.

A Coquitlam Foundation tax receipt will be sent to you by return mail.
Donations
Your gift will go to the causes that you specifically designate, or absent designation, to causes that the Foundation considers most deserving.

Various "open" endowment funds as well as "designated" funds have been established by the Foundation through the generosity of Coquitlam residents. (see link on Funds). "Named" funds will perpetuate the family names of community members, while enabling their good works to continue. Funds can work directly through local service clubs and non-profit societies.

You can make cash donations, or offer gifts in kind. Gifting now will allow you to see and enjoy the positive impact your giving has on individuals and groups in the community.

The Coquitlam Foundation approaches each donation on its own merits to help donors meet their charitable objective. The process starts with two options: you may give any amount to an existing fund or you may establish your own fund (assuming the required criteria are met).

Your Gift of Property
Tangible gifts may be donated to the Foundation. These include cash, real estate, mutual funds, term deposits, vehicles, art, jewelry, stocks, bonds and insurance. The appropriate disposition of these assets for charitable purposes may also create tax savings now for you and your heirs.

A bequest of property would allow you to protect land with unique ecological features forever through a conservation covenant, or ecological gift. The Coquitlam Foundation is authorized by the provincial and federal governments to hold conservation covenants, pursuant to the Land Title Act, and to receive ecological gifts under the Income Tax Act. Donors may be interested in gifting developed or heritage properties.

Corporate Donations
Business owners and corporations can also get directly involved in named funds with the Coquitlam Foundation. To manage ever increasing requests for corporate donation, the foundation can create a named fund for your business that removes the task from you and your staff. The Foundation manages both the investment and administration of this fund.

Donating through your Last Will and Testament
When you are preparing your Last Will and Testament, you may designate a specific dollar amount or percentage of your assets to the Coquitlam Foundation.

Other ways to donate through your Will include:
  • naming the Coquitlam Foundation as the beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF,
  • naming the Coquitlam Foundation as the beneficiary of your existing or paid-up life insurance policy,
  • purchasing a new insurance policy naming the Coquitlam Foundation as beneficiary
  • donating assets to the Foundation.
A professional advisor can ensure you are getting the maximum tax and legal advantages allowed for your gift, while also maximizing the positive impact of your donations. Please talk to a professional advisor, either a financial or estate planner to help plan your giving.

Take your first step towards philanthropy by contacting the Coquitlam Foundation at 604-468-9598 or reach our Executive Director by email: llawson@coquitlamfoundation.com. Volunteers will be pleased to meet with you (and your legal or financial advisors) to review the many options available.
